Yarn has become a popular alternative to synthetic braiding hair because it is light, inexpensive, comes in every colour imaginable and has a soft, matte finish. This gallery shows how versatile it can be: chocolate and black twists with beads, pink, turquoise and yellow mélange box braids, a navy bob with light blue accents, gray yarn dreadlocks piled into a bun, chunky twists cut into a bob and a braided mohawk made from yarn braids.
Yarn works best on hair with some texture, which grips the fibre well, but yarn wraps can also be done on relaxed or straighter hair with thinner results. Think about size before booking. Jumbo twists install faster and make a bold statement, while skinny braids take hours but give more styling options and a lighter feel.
Colour choice is where yarn really shines. Analogous blends, like blues with gray, feel sophisticated, while peekaboo shades of red or yellow underneath black twists keep things subtle. Neutral shades, such as black or chocolate, let the texture take centre stage.
1. Two-Tone Twists with Beads
Chocolate and black twists make a subtle colour pair that flatters many skin tones without looking flashy. Shiny beads scattered near the roots catch the light around the face and brighten the eyes, especially when paired with sparkly earrings.

2. Long Braids with Blue and Pink Yarn
Long box braids woven with a mélange of pink, turquoise and yellow yarn make a vivid, joyful statement. Single-colour yarn braids are lovely too, but a multicoloured mix like this gives a playful, eye-catching result that stands out in any crowd.

3. Long Black Yarn Twists
Thick, shoulder-length black twists look striking with a side part. A centre part on twists of this length can make the face appear rounder, whereas an asymmetrical part has a slimming effect and feels more polished.

4. Blue and White Yarn Hairstyle
Blue and white yarn creates a fresh, breezy combination. If you want a longer style without too much bulk, ask for layered braids, which vary the lengths to lighten the overall shape and add movement.

5. Blonde Ponytail with Yarn
Yarn wraps are often associated with locs, but they can also be done on Caucasian or relaxed hair. The braids come out thinner on smoother textures, as in this blonde ponytail, giving a different, more delicate effect.

6. Blue and Gray Braids with Beads
Blue and gray yarn with beads creates a sophisticated colour blend. Mixing neighbouring shades with a neutral tone like gray results in a look that feels interesting for weeks without becoming tiresome. Wooden or metal beads at the ends add weight that helps the braids swing.

7. Jumbo Twists
For a bold finish, go supersized: chunky yarn twists cut into a bob look fantastic, especially if you want to highlight large eyes and full lips. Jumbo twists also install more quickly than smaller sizes.

8. Tightly Coiled Gray Dreads in a Bun
Gray yarn dreadlocks show how versatile yarn styles can be. Whether you choose thick dreads or long, thin coiled ones, piling them into an oversized bun on top of the head creates a striking, sculptural shape.

9. Colorful Twists with Contrasting Decoration
Burgundy and blue twists already make a statement, but fine contrasting threads wrapped over sections of the braids add another layer of detail. It is an easy way to personalise multicoloured twists. Choose a thread colour that picks up your makeup or outfit for a coordinated finish.

10. Blonde Faux Locs with Braided Crown
Want to try blonde without bleach? White and blonde yarn faux locs give the effect without any damage. The kinky texture is easy to style into a braided crown, a top knot or a halo twist.

11. Black Twists with Red and Yellow Peekaboos
Chunky black twists provide a break from daily styling and protect natural hair. Here, red and yellow yarn is hidden underneath, peeking out for a surprise pop of colour. The length and thickness are ideal for everyday wear.

12. Blue Twisted Style for Layered Twists
Layered styles translate well to twists and braids. Combining shorter and much longer pieces in one look, as with these medium-length blue faux locs, feels dynamic and unexpected compared to one-length braids. Ask your braider to cut the faux locs to staggered lengths before sealing the ends.

13. Skinny Braids in a Half Updo
If you have already worn jumbo braids, try skinny ones next. These black micro faux locs in a half updo take time to install, but the delicate result is worth it and makes a versatile protective style.

14. Yarn Braids over Dreadlocks
Yarn braids can be styled imaginatively, as with this braided mohawk. Braided upside down, from the nape toward the front, the style keeps the back flat while adding flattering height at the front. It is a smart way to restyle braids that are a few weeks old.

15. Navy Bob with Light Blue Accents
Navy yarn braids shaped into a bob have a flawless colour and silhouette. An accent of light blue works like highlights, adding an adventurous touch while keeping the overall look polished. The bob length keeps the yarn light and quick to dry after washing.

16. Tight Green Boxer Braids
Boxer braids look more original with bright yarn worked in. Using several shades of the same colour, as with these greens, keeps the effect cohesive and pretty while still standing out. Tight boxer braids also hold up well during sport.

17. Red, Orange and Yellow Half Updo
Red, orange and yellow yarn braids and locs in a half updo are captivating, but plan for washing. Yarn becomes heavy once it absorbs water, so wash the braids while they rest in a large sink to reduce strain.

18. Half up Minnie Mouse Buns
Minnie Mouse buns are not limited to full updos. Leaving some braids hanging down creates a cute half-up version that works even with skinny plaits and gives a cool, playful mood. Secure each bun with pins so it keeps its rounded shape.

19. Very Thick and Long Twists
Very thick, long black twists look impressive even in simple styles like this pillbox-shaped bun. There is no need for bright colour; the texture and volume of the twists do all the work. Moisturise the scalp regularly, since thick twists can be heavy.

20. Side Swept Yarn Twists
Short teal yarn twists swept to one side open up a world of colourful braiding. You can learn from tutorials and do them yourself with some effort, or book an experienced braider for a quicker, polished result.

Washing and drying yarn braids
Yarn soaks up water and becomes heavy, so washing needs a different approach than with synthetic hair:
- Wash every two to three weeks, with your braids resting in a large sink or tub to take the weight off your scalp.
- Dilute shampoo in a spray bottle and apply it to the scalp; squeeze the lather gently through the braids rather than rubbing.
- Press out water with a microfibre towel and let the braids dry completely, ideally with a hooded dryer, to avoid mildew.
Choosing yarn for braiding
Acrylic yarn is the usual choice because it holds colour and does not shrink much. Avoid wool, which can felt, and very fuzzy yarns that pill. Ask your braider to pre-stretch or cut yarn to even lengths, and keep installs to around six to eight weeks so new growth does not lock into the base of each braid.
